Best AutoHotkey alternatives for Windows 11, free and paid
By Param Nimbark. Last updated 2026-10-27.
Looking for an AutoHotkey alternative on Windows 11? The right one depends on what your scripts do: remap keys, expand text as you type, start things from a hotkey, or click and type their way through other apps. Below are six free and paid alternatives, picked by job, each with what it costs, what it does and where it stops, from the maker's own pages. Seqtrix is our app and it is on the list; where another tool is the better pick, this page says so.
Installs from the Microsoft Store, no SmartScreen prompt. Free Starter plan, no account.
Direct installer for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, v0.16.0.
The short answer, by job
- • Remap keys, or make a shortcut type text or start an app: PowerToys Keyboard Manager. Free and open source, from Microsoft.
- • Expand text as you type: Espanso. Free and open source.
- • Record clicks and typing in apps, websites or Excel: Power Automate for desktop. No extra cost with a Microsoft account.
- • Run a program at a set time or at sign-in: Task Scheduler, which comes with Windows.
- • Record a macro and get an AutoHotkey script from it: Pulover's Macro Creator. Free, with its newest release from 2021.
- • Chain apps, keys, text and commands into one sequence on a hotkey, a schedule or an app opening, without code: Seqtrix, our app. Free Starter plan; paid passes from $4.99 for 30 days.
- • You write code and want all of it in one tool: stay on AutoHotkey v2. It is free, open source and still updated.
Every fact about another maker's tool is from that maker's own pages, linked under each card below. Checked on 27 October 2026.
First, what you are replacing: AutoHotkey
AutoHotkey calls itself "a free, open source macro-creation and automation software utility" that "is driven by a custom scripting language that has special provision for defining keyboard shortcuts". Its hotstrings are "mainly used to expand abbreviations as you type them", and can launch any scripted action too. It is licensed under GPL-2.0 and still updated: version 2.0.31, on its stable v2.0 line, was tagged on 25 October 2026. Its README says v1 is not being maintained, with support from community members, and that each v2 release is tested only on Windows 11.
So you would not be leaving a dead project. The list below is for when the scripting language is the part you want to drop, sorted by the job your scripts do.

The alternatives, one by one
PowerToys Keyboard Manager
- Maker
- Microsoft
- Cost
- Free and open source
- Best for
- Remapping keys, or a shortcut that types text or starts one app.
PowerToys is Microsoft's set of free, open-source utilities for Windows. Its Keyboard Manager remaps keys and shortcuts, and can map a key or a shortcut to text: Microsoft's own example swaps the H key for the text 'Hello!'. A shortcut can also start an app, with its arguments and the folder it starts in, or open a URI, and a remap can work across Windows or only in the app you name. A second utility, Workspaces, launches a set of applications to custom positions with a single click.
Where it stops: Each remap does one thing: it sends a key, a shortcut or text, starts one app or opens one URI. Remaps work only while PowerToys runs in the background, and not on any password screen, and Microsoft suggests not using Keyboard Manager while playing games.

Power Automate for desktop
- Maker
- Microsoft
- Cost
- No extra cost with a Microsoft account; scheduled runs need Premium or pay-as-you-go
- Best for
- Recording and replaying work in desktop apps, websites and Excel.
A drag-and-drop flow designer with more than 400 prebuilt actions, and a recorder for desktop and web apps, both included with a Microsoft account. Microsoft's examples include extracting data from websites into Excel and filling in web forms, and a flow can work with an app's UI elements, images or screen coordinates. You run a flow from the Power Automate console, or from a keyboard shortcut you set in its Properties. With a Microsoft account it is available at no extra cost, and your flows are stored on your OneDrive.
Where it stops: Microsoft's account comparison lists no connectivity with cloud flows (triggering and scheduling flows) for a Microsoft account. Starting a flow from a run URL or a desktop shortcut, which is how Microsoft shows running one from Task Scheduler, needs a Power Automate Premium plan or pay-as-you-go access. It also needs a sign-in and an active internet connection, does not run on devices with ARM processors, and runs one flow at a time in local attended mode.

Task Scheduler
- Maker
- Microsoft, part of Windows
- Cost
- Comes with Windows
- Best for
- Starting a program or script at a set time or on a system event.
Task Scheduler runs a task when the criteria you choose, called triggers, are met: at a set time, on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, when the system starts, when a user logs on, when the computer goes idle or when a system event occurs. A task can have up to 48 triggers and up to 32 actions, run one after another, and an action can execute a command line, such as starting Notepad.
Where it stops: Its triggers are times and system events, and a key press is not one of them. None of its actions types, presses keys or clicks inside an app: that has to come from a script or program the task starts, which you write and keep up to date yourself.

Espanso
- Maker
- An open-source project on GitHub
- Cost
- Free and open source (GPL-3.0)
- Best for
- Replacing AutoHotkey hotstrings: text that expands as you type.
Espanso calls itself "A Privacy-first, Cross-platform Text Expander written in Rust". It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and "Works with almost any program", and its feature list includes date expansion, forms, regex triggers, shell commands, custom scripts, app-specific configurations and packages. Version 2.4.1, published on 2 September 2026, comes with a Windows installer and a portable zip.
Where it stops: It is a text expander, so everything starts from what you type, and your matches live in configuration files you edit: its feature list says "File based configuration".

Pulover's Macro Creator
- Maker
- An open-source project on GitHub
- Cost
- Free (GPL-3.0)
- Best for
- Recording a macro without writing the script yourself.
In its own words, "a Free Automation Tool and Script Generator based on AutoHotkey language". It "features a large range of automation commands, has a built-in recorder and can capture inputs in its interface".
Where it stops: Its newest release on GitHub, v5.4.1, was published on 24 September 2021. Because it is based on the AutoHotkey language, it suits someone who wants AutoHotkey with a recorder in front of it more than someone leaving AutoHotkey behind.

Seqtrix (our app)
- Maker
- Us, the makers of this site
- Cost
- Free Starter plan; paid passes from $4.99 for 30 days
- Best for
- Chaining apps, keys, text and commands into one sequence on a hotkey, a schedule or an app opening, without code.
Seqtrix is a Windows app where you put steps in a sequence and fire it from a hotkey, a schedule, an app opening or closing, a click or the Mini Mode launcher. Its steps open and close apps, type text, press keys and shortcuts, run command lines, wait, lock, sleep or shut down the PC, control media and audio, and block apps and sites with Focus Lock. Security steps, kept in sequences of their own, encrypt, hide, password-lock or securely delete files. A step can run only if the step before it succeeded or failed, or if a file exists or is missing. You start from one of 85 templates (15 on Starter), drag steps in yourself, or type what you want in plain English and let Describe (AI), a small AI model on your PC, draft the steps for you to review; setting it up downloads about 2 GB once.
Where it stops: It is closed source, and the free Starter plan stops at 5 sequences and 3 schedules. It does not remap keys, expand text as you type, click the mouse, record macros or loop: the section below says which tool to use instead.

Where Seqtrix is the wrong pick
Seqtrix has no key remapping and no as-you-type expansion. Its Type Text step pastes its text through the clipboard when a sequence runs, so it replaces what you had copied. PowerToys Keyboard Manager and Espanso do these jobs for free.
There is no mouse-click step and no recorder. Power Automate for desktop records desktop and web apps, at no extra cost with a Microsoft account.
A sequence runs its steps once, top to bottom, and a step's only logic is its run condition. For rows of data, the data entry guide names the tools that loop.
Seqtrix does not open .ahk files and has no converter. A Run Command step runs a command line through the system shell, so a script you can start from the command line can be one step of a sequence.
Seqtrix is closed source. If you need to read every line of what runs on your PC, AutoHotkey, PowerToys, Espanso and Pulover's Macro Creator are all open source.
Hotkeys and schedules work only while the app runs, in its window or in the system tray.
The app checks your plan on launch and every 30 minutes, sending a hashed ID for this device. If it cannot reach the server it can fall back to the free Starter plan.
Common questions
What is the best free AutoHotkey alternative for Windows 11?
It depends on the job. To remap keys, or make a shortcut type text or start an app, PowerToys Keyboard Manager is free and open source. To expand text as you type, Espanso is free and open source. To record clicks and typing in apps, websites or Excel, Power Automate for desktop is available at no extra cost with a Microsoft account. To start a program at a set time, Task Scheduler comes with Windows. Checked on 27 October 2026, on the makers' own pages, which are linked under each card above.
Is there an AutoHotkey alternative that needs no coding?
Yes. Power Automate for desktop has a drag-and-drop designer and a recorder, PowerToys Keyboard Manager is set up in rows in its settings, and Seqtrix builds a sequence from steps you drag in, a template, or a plain-English description that a small AI model on your PC turns into steps for you to review. Pulover's Macro Creator records for you too, but it is based on the AutoHotkey language.
Is AutoHotkey still maintained?
Yes. Version 2.0.31, on its stable v2.0 line, was tagged on its GitHub page on 25 October 2026, next to v2.1 alpha builds. Its README says AutoHotkey v1 is not being maintained, with support from community members, and that each v2 release is tested only on Windows 11. Checked on 27 October 2026.
Does Windows 11 have anything like AutoHotkey built in?
Not a scripting tool. Task Scheduler comes with Windows and starts programs at set times or on events such as start-up, sign-in or the computer going idle, but a key press is not one of its triggers. Microsoft's free PowerToys adds key remapping, and Power Automate for desktop adds recorded flows at no extra cost with a Microsoft account.
Can Seqtrix run my AutoHotkey scripts?
It does not open .ahk files and has no converter. Its Run Command step runs a command line through the system shell, so a script you can start from the command line can be one step of a sequence. To rebuild a script as a sequence instead, start from a template or describe it in plain English.
How much does Seqtrix cost?
Starter is free: 5 sequences, 3 schedules and the Hotkey, Time and App triggers. Advanced is $4.99 for 30 days or $49 for a year and adds the File Watch and System triggers, 50 sequences and 50 schedules; Pro is $9.99 or $99 and removes the caps. Paid plans are passes that do not renew by themselves, and every install starts with a 15-day Advanced trial with no card.
Does Seqtrix need the internet?
The steps run on your PC, but the app checks your plan on launch and every 30 minutes, sending a hashed ID for this device. If it cannot reach the server it can fall back to the free Starter plan.
