How to lock a folder on Windows 11 Home, built-in and free ways first
By Param Nimbark. Last reviewed .
Short answer
Windows 11 Home has no EFS and no BitLocker Drive Encryption, and Microsoft gives no password step for zip folders. If your worry is a lost or stolen PC, Device Encryption, which Home has on a PC that meets its checks, may be all you need.
To keep one folder behind a password, a free app is enough: 7-Zip puts it in an AES-256 archive, VeraCrypt keeps it in an encrypted container you mount as a drive, and Cryptomator turns it into a vault of encrypted files.
Seqtrix, our app, is free to start, with a paid upgrade, and fits when you want the lock to run by itself, on a schedule, a hotkey or when an app starts.
Seqtrix's own steps for a folder are in the guide to password-protecting a folder on Windows 11; in Seqtrix 0.16.0, give the lock step a sequence of its own, as Where Seqtrix fits explains.
Installs from the Microsoft Store, no SmartScreen prompt. Free Starter plan, no account.

Windows' own ways
These come from Microsoft, with no app from another maker.
Device Encryption
- Cost
- Built in
- Kind
- Encrypts the whole drive
- What it does
- Turns on BitLocker encryption for the Windows drive and the other fixed drives, so it covers every folder on them together, not one folder on its own.
- On Windows 11 Home
- Microsoft says it is available on Windows Home, on a PC that meets its checks, such as a usable TPM and Secure Boot, which System Information shows.
- If the password or key is lost
- The recovery key is saved to the Microsoft account you sign in with, Microsoft Support cannot recreate a lost key, and without the key a reset removes all of your files.
- Good for
- Anyone who wants the data on the whole PC protected if the PC is lost or stolen.
- Watch out
- It does not encrypt external or USB drives, and Microsoft says a PC that uses only local accounts stays unprotected even though the data is encrypted.
OneDrive Personal Vault
- Cost
- Free, with a paid upgrade
- Kind
- Encrypted cloud vault
- What it does
- A protected folder in your OneDrive that opens only after a second sign-in step, locks itself again after a time without use, and blocks sharing of the files inside.
- On Windows 11 Home
- It works on Windows 11 through the OneDrive app, as well as on the web and in the OneDrive phone app, and you set it up on each device.
- If the password or key is lost
- Opening it takes your Microsoft account and a second step, such as a fingerprint, a PIN or a code sent by email or text message, and the Personal Vault page gives no steps for losing that second step.
- Good for
- A few important files that you want behind a second sign-in step and on your phone as well.
- Watch out
- Without a Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscription it holds only three files, and Microsoft says that on Windows 10 it does not protect the names of the files while it is locked.

Standard user accounts and Security tab permissions
- Cost
- Built in
- Kind
- Blocks other Windows users
- What it does
- Each person signs in to their own account, and permissions, set on the Security tab in Properties, can keep all other users out.
- On Windows 11 Home
- Microsoft documents standard accounts for Windows 11 with no Home exception, but its permissions page lists no Home edition, so check that your PC shows the Security tab.
- If the password or key is lost
- There is no password on the folder to lose, and by default an administrator can take ownership of the folder regardless of its permissions.
- Good for
- A shared home PC where each person has their own sign-in and the people you want to keep out are not administrators.
- Watch out
- Microsoft says administrators can access all files, so anyone with an administrator account can open the folder.
Free apps
These apps cost nothing to use.
7-Zip
- Cost
- Free
- Kind
- Encrypts
- What it does
- Packs the folder into a 7z archive encrypted with AES-256 under a password you choose.
- On Windows 11 Home
- Its site says it works in Windows 11 and names no edition.
- If the password or key is lost
- Its site offers no password recovery, and it says it makes the key from your password with a large number of iterations.
- Good for
- A folder you open rarely, send to someone or keep as one backup file.
- Watch out
- It is a file archiver, not a folder lock, so you extract the archive to use the files and pack it again to save changes.

VeraCrypt
- Cost
- Free
- Kind
- Encrypts
- What it does
- Creates an encrypted container file and mounts it as a drive, and encrypts the file names, folder names and contents of everything inside.
- On Windows 11 Home
- Its supported systems page lists Windows 11 on x64 and ARM64 and names no edition, and an administrator has to install it.
- If the password or key is lost
- Its makers say they cannot recover your data without your password or key, and only a volume header backup made earlier can reset the password.
- Good for
- Anyone who wants a free, open source encrypted drive to work in and does not mind mounting it first.
- Watch out
- You move the folder into the container and mount it before each use, which is more setup than a lock on the folder itself.

Cryptomator
- Cost
- Free
- Kind
- Encrypted cloud vault
- What it does
- Turns a folder it calls a vault into encrypted files with encrypted names, using AES with 256-bit keys, and shows the contents as a drive while the vault is unlocked.
- On Windows 11 Home
- Its download page names Windows 10 version 1803 as the minimum and does not name Windows 11, and its installer adds the WinFsp driver.
- If the password or key is lost
- Its makers say a lost password means you cannot decrypt your files, and only the recovery key you saved can set a new password.
- Good for
- A folder in your cloud storage that you want kept as encrypted files.
- Watch out
- You unlock the vault in the app each time you want the files, and the free phone apps are read-only.

Free apps with a paid upgrade
These apps are free to start, and a paid upgrade adds more.
AxCrypt
- Cost
- Free, with a paid upgrade
- Kind
- Encrypts
- What it does
- Encrypts each file in the folder on its own as an .axx file, with 128-bit or 256-bit AES, and can secure a folder so new files are encrypted when you clean up or sign out.
- On Windows 11 Home
- The maker lists Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11 and names no edition.
- If the password or key is lost
- A password reset lets you sign in again, but the maker says files encrypted with the old password stay encrypted and it cannot decrypt them.
- Good for
- Encrypting the files in a folder one by one, if you are happy to sign in with an account.
- Watch out
- You need an account with a verified email, the folder and file names stay visible, subfolders are left out unless you turn them on, and the maker calls the free plan basic encryption for temporary use.

Folder Lock
- Cost
- Free, with a paid upgrade
- Kind
- Encrypts
- What it does
- Keeps files and folders in a Locker, a virtual drive that encrypts them with AES-256 as they are copied in; a separate Protect Folders option hides and blocks a folder in place without encrypting it.
- On Windows 11 Home
- The maker lists 64-bit Windows 11 and Windows 10 and names no edition.
- If the password or key is lost
- The maker says Locker passwords are not stored, so a forgotten one cannot be retrieved and you will not get that Locker's data back.
- Good for
- Someone who wants an encrypted virtual drive to keep working in, with a Mac version as well.
- Watch out
- Free use stops at a storage, device and feature limit, after which you need a Pro licence, and Protect Folders hides and blocks without encrypting.

Wise Folder Hider
- Cost
- Free, with a paid upgrade
- Kind
- Hides only
- What it does
- Hides the folder from File Explorer behind the app's login password, and the free version can also lock up to 5 files and keep up to 50 MB in an encrypted locker.
- On Windows 11 Home
- Its tech specifications list Windows 11, in 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
- If the password or key is lost
- The free version has no automatic password recovery, and the maker's password retrieval service is manual, by email, once per order.
- Good for
- Keeping a folder out of sight on a shared PC when you do not need it encrypted.
- Watch out
- Hiding is not encryption, the free version caps the locker at 50 MB and locking at 5 files, and the site names no cipher.

Seqtrix
- Cost
- Free, with a paid upgrade
- Kind
- Encrypts
- What it does
- A Security Lock step set to Encrypt packs the folder into one .sflocked file encrypted with AES-256-GCM and removes the original; double-click the file and type the password to get the folder back.
- On Windows 11 Home
- It runs on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, Home included, and its Encrypt step does not depend on EFS or BitLocker.
- If the password or key is lost
- Seqtrix cannot reset the password and no support ticket can open your files; a Master Mode recovery key opens folders you locked while Master Mode was unlocked, and without either the folder stays encrypted.
- Good for
- Someone who wants the lock to run by itself, on a schedule, a hotkey or when an app starts, rather than from memory.
- Watch out
- The step keeps its password in plain text in the Seqtrix data folder so it can run unattended, schedules fire only while the app runs, and the app is not open source and has had no independent security audit.

Paid apps
These apps cost money to keep using, after a free trial.
Folder Guard
- Cost
- Paid, with a free trial
- Kind
- Blocks access, no encryption
- What it does
- Leaves the folder unchanged and turns away other programs that try to open it; a locked folder shows an empty window with an Unlock button until the right password is typed.
- On Windows 11 Home
- The maker lists Windows 11 and Windows 10, 32-bit and 64-bit including ARM64, and names no edition.
- If the password or key is lost
- With your licence details, its Emergency Recovery Utility erases the Master Password, but in trial mode anyone can download that utility and use it.
- Good for
- Keeping other people at this PC out of a folder without changing the files.
- Watch out
- It does not encrypt, so the maker says a drive moved to another PC, a boot into another operating system and, by default, Safe Mode leave the folder unprotected.

Not on Windows 11 Home
Windows 11 Home does not have these, or they do not lock a folder.
EFS, the Encrypt contents to secure data check box
Microsoft says file encryption is not available in the Home edition of Windows.
BitLocker Drive Encryption and Manage BitLocker
Microsoft says it is only on Windows Pro, Enterprise and Education, not on Home, which gets Device Encryption with one on or off setting instead.
A password on a Compressed (zipped) folder
Microsoft gives no password step for zip folders, says Windows does not support encrypted archives, and points to other apps such as 7-Zip or WinRAR for them.
The folder locker batch file
It hides the folder with attrib +h +s, which Microsoft describes as setting attributes on files and folders, with no password or encryption, so showing hidden items or running attrib -h -s brings the folder back.

Controlled folder access in Windows Security
Microsoft says it blocks unknown or untrusted apps from changing files in protected folders, and its page says nothing about keeping people or other accounts out.

Where Seqtrix fits
Seqtrix is our app. It is free to start, with a paid upgrade, so it sits in that group, and its card above is held to the same fields as every other way.
Its Encrypt step packs a folder into one .sflocked file with AES-256-GCM on Windows 10 and 11, Home included, without EFS or BitLocker. Because the lock is a step in a sequence, it can run on a schedule, a hotkey or when an app starts, without mounting anything.
Its limits: it is not open source, it has had no independent security audit, and schedules fire only while the app runs. The original folder is deleted the normal way, not overwritten, so on a hard disk a recovery tool can find the old files until Windows reuses that space. And Seqtrix 0.16.0 will not save a Security Lock step in the same sequence as workflow steps, so give the lock a sequence of its own.
The guide to encrypting a file without BitLocker builds that one-step lock, for a file or a whole folder. The guide to password-protecting a folder on Windows 11 walks through the Windows and 7-Zip routes, and what each plan includes is on the pricing page.

Common questions
Can I lock a folder on Windows 11 Home without installing anything?
Windows 11 Home has no EFS and no BitLocker Drive Encryption, and Microsoft gives no password step for zip folders. What Home does have is Device Encryption for the whole drive, on a PC that meets its checks, a standard account for each person, and OneDrive Personal Vault for a few files behind a second sign-in step.
Can I use EFS, Encrypt contents to secure data, on Windows 11 Home?
No. Microsoft says file encryption is not available in the Home edition of Windows. On Home, Device Encryption encrypts the whole drive instead, on a PC that meets its checks.
Is hiding a folder the same as locking it?
No. The Hidden attribute only keeps a folder out of view: anyone can choose View, Show, Hidden items in File Explorer and open it. To keep the contents closed when someone finds the folder, use a way that encrypts, such as the free 7-Zip or VeraCrypt.
What happens if I forget the password?
It depends on the way. 7-Zip offers no password recovery. VeraCrypt and Cryptomator say they cannot recover your files, unless you saved a header backup or a recovery key earlier. AxCrypt and Folder Lock say files under a lost password stay locked. Device Encryption keeps a recovery key in your Microsoft account. Seqtrix cannot reset a password, and only a Master Mode recovery key opens folders you locked while Master Mode was unlocked.
Is there a free way to encrypt a folder on Windows 11 Home?
Yes. 7-Zip, VeraCrypt and Cryptomator are free and open source. 7-Zip puts the folder in an AES-256 archive, VeraCrypt in an encrypted container you mount as a drive, and Cryptomator in a vault of encrypted files. 7-Zip and VeraCrypt list Windows 11, and Cryptomator names Windows 10 version 1803 as its minimum.
Does Folder Guard encrypt the folder?
No. Its maker says Folder Guard does not encrypt or modify your files and folders and only restricts access to them, so a drive moved to another PC or a boot into another operating system leaves the folder unprotected.
Does Seqtrix work on Windows 11 Home?
Yes. Seqtrix, our app, runs on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, Home included, and its Encrypt step does not depend on EFS or BitLocker. It is free to start, with a paid upgrade, and what each plan includes is on the pricing page.
