OBS stream setup automation: one hotkey, everything ready

By Param Nimbark. Last updated 2026-10-12.

Every stream starts with the same ten minutes of chores: close Discord, mute the notifications, hide the Desktop, clear the clipboard, open OBS, wait for the scenes to load, press Start Streaming, and then discover the one thing you forgot once chat points it out. Windows can launch OBS for you, and OBS can go live on a launch flag, but neither can do the rest. This guide covers the manual Windows setup first, then the Seqtrix sequence that does all of it from one hotkey, and the App Launch trigger that runs it whenever OBS opens, however you opened it.

The manual way: what Windows and OBS can do on their own

If all you want is OBS open and live when you sit down, you do not need any extra software. These four options are built in, and each one covers one piece of the routine.

Settings > Apps > Startup, or the shell:startup folder

Press Win + R, type shell:startup and drop an OBS shortcut into the folder that opens. OBS now launches every time you sign in. Microsoft documents both this folder and the Settings > Apps > Startup switch. The catch: it runs at every boot, not when you decide to stream, and it opens OBS and nothing else.

Launch flags on the OBS shortcut

Right-click the OBS shortcut, open Properties, and append flags to the Target field, for example --profile "Twitch" --collection "Main" --startstreaming. OBS then opens the right profile and goes live immediately. The flags only act at launch; there is no flag that closes other apps, mutes the mic or stops the stream later.

OBS Settings > Hotkeys

OBS lets you bind Start Streaming, Stop Streaming and scene switches to key combinations. That is one keypress for one OBS action. Discord, Spotify, notifications and your Desktop are outside its reach, and the hotkey only works once OBS is already open.

Xbox Game Bar (Win + G)

The recorder built into Windows. Win + G opens it and Win + Alt + R starts a clip. It records; it does not stream to Twitch or YouTube, and it has no scenes, overlays or sources.

Put together, the manual route gives you OBS open and streaming at sign-in. It leaves Discord running, the notifications on, the Desktop full of icons and the clipboard holding whatever you last copied, and when the stream ends nothing is put back.

The Seqtrix way: one hotkey runs the whole pre-stream routine

Seqtrix is a Windows automation app that runs a list of steps in order. The pre-stream sequence below is eight steps, and it is bound to one global hotkey. Press it from the game, from the browser or from the Desktop and the whole list runs.

  1. 1
    Close the chat apps

A Run Command step stops Discord, Slack, Teams, Telegram and WhatsApp so no message pops over the stream.

  2. 2
    Turn off notification toasts

A Run Command step switches Windows toasts off for the session.

  3. 3
    Hide the Desktop icons

A Run Command step hides everything on the Desktop so the game capture or the display capture is clean.

  4. 4
    Clear the clipboard

A Run Command step empties the clipboard so a stray paste cannot show a password on air.

  5. 5
    Clear the screen

A Press Key step sends Win + D.

  6. 6
    Open OBS

An Open Application step launches obs64.exe. Give the shortcut the launch flags you want, such as --profile and --collection.

  7. 7
    Wait for OBS

A Wait step of a few seconds lets OBS load its scene collection and sources.

  8. 8
    Start streaming

A Press Key step sends the Start Streaming hotkey you set in OBS under Settings > Hotkeys, and the stream goes live.

From template: Set up to record my screen

In Seqtrix open Templates, search for Set up to record my screen and press Try this template. It already contains the first five steps above plus a dated recordings folder, and it ends by opening the Xbox Game Bar. Swap that last step for an Open Application step pointing at obs64.exe, add the Wait and the Start Streaming keypress, and bind the sequence to a hotkey. The template is on the Advanced plan, which the 15-day trial includes.

From template: Someone just walked in

The panic button for a live stream. Search Templates for Someone just walked in and press Try this template: it minimises every window, pauses playback, mutes the speakers and the microphone, and hides the Desktop icons, in that order, in about two seconds. Bind it to a second hotkey and the moment a family member opens the door you are muted and your screen is blank.

The differentiator: run it whenever OBS opens

A hotkey still relies on you remembering to press it. The App Launch/Close trigger removes that step. Open Schedules, create a schedule for the prep sequence, choose App Launch/Close and pick obs64.exe from the running apps. From then on the routine runs by itself every time OBS starts. A second schedule on the Close event can run a tidy-up sequence: notifications back on, Desktop icons back, Discord reopened. Both directions are on every plan, including the free one.

A Stream Deck gives you the physical buttons but not the trigger; the Seqtrix vs Stream Deck page lists what each side does better.

FAQ

Can OBS start streaming automatically on its own?

Only at launch. OBS accepts launch parameters such as --startstreaming, --startrecording, --profile, --collection and --scene on its shortcut, so a shortcut in the Windows Startup folder can open OBS and go live when you sign in. It cannot close Discord, mute your microphone, hide the Desktop or put anything back afterwards, which is why people wrap OBS in an automation.

How does the App Launch trigger work with OBS?

In Seqtrix, open Schedules, create a new schedule for your prep sequence, choose App Launch/Close and pick obs64.exe from the running apps. From then on the prep sequence runs whenever OBS starts, even if you opened it from the Start menu, and a second sequence on the Close event can restore notifications and your Desktop when OBS exits. The App Launch/Close trigger is available on every plan.

Does the hotkey work while a game is in the foreground?

Yes. Seqtrix hotkeys are global, so the combination fires from any app, including a full-screen game. Pick a combination OBS and the game do not already use, such as Ctrl+Shift+F9.

Is Seqtrix a Stream Deck replacement?

For the software side, yes: a hotkey or a Mini Mode slot runs the same multi-step routines a Stream Deck button would, without the hardware, and a sequence can do things a button cannot, such as encrypting a folder or reacting to an app opening. You lose the physical keys with icons. The Seqtrix vs Stream Deck page lays out both sides.
